THE PETE SCUDDER STORY

In 1974, Pete Scudder finished high school in Walnut Creek and moved to the Monterey Peninsula with $500 and a razor-sharp entrepreneurial spirit he had yet to discover. Once in Monterey, he quickly found work with a high school friend's family business, C.L. Frost Roofing, and worked there as a laborer during the day while he attended college at night.

Starting at the bottom of the proverbial ladder, Pete found himself doing clean up and tear off work and within a few short months, he became C.L. Frost's "tear-off champion." His keen attention to detail, his organizational skills and his ability to take charge and make sure things got done properly and efficiently singled him out as a star;  he was a natural leader and everyone around him recognized that fact. Still attending college at night, he had even begun to take some carpenter apprentice classes. There were other seasonal roofing jobs to follow his stretch at C.L. Frost, but when Pete found himself sitting around waiting for work more often than he was actually working, that entrepreneurial spirit took over and he went back to school to get his contractor's license. With a wife, a mortgage, a 6-month old girl and another baby girl on the way, sitting around waiting for work wasn't an option.

Brand new contractor's license in hand, a sturdy white pick-up truck, a lift-bed and an old kettle truck he had purchased from Fred Williams, Pete and his wife Karen started Scudder Roofing out of a tiny room in their home on Paradise Rd. in Prunedale during early 1982. Karen handled the bookkeeping and babies while Pete took care of estimating. Neither of them knew what would happen, but both of them believed in the business, their abilities and each other, and they put everything they had into the idea of building Scudder Roofing.

The Scudder story is one of a little luck, a lot of faith, hard work, an unwavering work ethic and the ability to hire and work with the best of the best in a team environment. The company quickly grew from the diminutive home office in Prunedale into its own superb headquarters and warehouse facility in Marina, including a state-of-the-art product showroom and over 65 loyal employees.

Pete Scudder has always given 110%. In the early days when he was a shingler, he set high standards for those around him but saved the highest for himself. If the quota was 8 squares per day, Pete would lay 10. If for any reason he didn't get the get the required 8 completed, he'd stay after the clock to finish up without ever asking for additional pay. If there was ever a problem with a job, he would visit the job site on his own time and attempt to make it right.

Today, you'll still find Pete working 12-14 hour days, 6 to 7 days a week, and you'll also still find him climbing roofs and doing estimates. He is a hands-on CEO who believes in reinvesting in his community, kindness and concern for others as well as getting the job done right the first time. Well liked by colleagues and respected by his peers, Pete Scudder treats his employees like family members and maintains an "open-door" policy at all times. And although he has always been -- and will continue to be -- a driving force in the roofing business, Pete's "other" priority is spending quality time with his own family who he has watched grow up right along side the business he and Karen started all those years ago. His eldest daughter (one of three) is now working along side her father as a production manager and the Scudder Roofing tradition looks as if it will be growing into the next generation.

Devotion to the job at hand, a total commitment to exceptional service and quality materials combined with the original work ethic Pete Scudder has expertly honed over the past 24 years is what makes Scudder Roofing the #1 choice in roofing contractors on the Monterey Peninsula and beyond. Scudder Roofing's promise of 100% customer satisfaction is a priority that the company challenges itself to build upon 365 days of the year. It begins at the receptionist's desk and follows through to all levels of the organization including sales, administration, finance and everything in between.

One way to define the word goal is the "finish line of a race." Pete and the Scudder Roofing Company's race for quality roofing and customer satisfaction is one that will never end.
