June 9th, 2010Why aren’t more people installing Solar on their homes?
May 26th, 2010By Devon Salter
I ask this question almost every day: Why aren’t more people installing solar on their homes?
The State of California and the Federal Government are willing to offset close to 40% of your entire system’s cost. If this was any other type of home improvement project I would dare say that every homeowner in the country would find a way to make it happen. If you could put in a swimming pool, a theater room or a new master bedroom and the government would subsidize 40% of the materials and installation, people would be lining up to take advantage of it, even though none of those types of projects lower your monthly expenses like solar will.
So why aren’t people lining up to take advantage of the high reward, no risk, money saving, environmental benefits of Solar? I believe the answer lies with a number of reasons:
• People just don’t know enough about solar.
• We, the Solar integrators, haven’t used enough resources to get the word out.
• Homeowners and business owners are still worried about the aesthetics of solar.
• The idea that Solar can’t be that great or everyone would be doing it.
• I don’t have the money right now.
• It’s not hot enough or sunny enough where we live.
Let’s address those typical responses when it comes to solar:
1) People just don’t know enough about solar
2) We, the Solar integrators, haven’t used enough resources to get the word out.
Solar integrators, manufacturers and distributors needs to spend more time educating the consumer and marketing the benefits of solar and going green.
3) Homeowners and business owners are still worried about the aesthetics of solar.
There are many aesthetically pleasing solar products on the market today – more than ever before. Solar panels are ever-evolving and they don’t necessarily have to be in a place that is visible on your home.
4) The idea that Solar can’t be that great or everyone would be doing it.
Ah, but Solar is that great. And it’s also catching on. Keep in mind, not everyone eats vegetables every day; however, we know how good vegetables are for you, right?
5) I don’t have the money right now.
There are a variety of ways to finance a solar project—even a simple low interest loan will give you immediate savings and an instant increase in the value of your home.
6) It’s not hot enough where we live.
Consumers everywhere need to know that it doesn’t have to be hot for solar to work effectively. In fact, it is actually the opposite; Solar panels are most efficient when the temperature is between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
That’s far from hot!
